Who'd have thought I'd have got excited about boxes? Not me, for one!
Legal & General keeps all of its paper. Six years ago, I was involved in a project that enabled us to scan and keep electronic images of all of the documents we had. The problem was we were scanning all the paper and keeping all the paper and that just didn't make sense to me. Why do you need the paper when you've got an electronic image? So I decided it's time to get rid of the paper, so we did.
All of our paper is kept in a warehouse in Bristol and that was costing us £25,000 a year just to keep it stored there. We got rid of 6,500 boxes, like ten-million sheets of paper. That's the equivalent of three double-decker buses all side by side.
I think it feels very strange to be nominated for a MAD award. Making a difference is something that we do in our daily life but to be nominated for it I think is really good.
