Sir Rob Margetts, your previous Chairman, provided wise and clear leadership to the Board for over a decade.

In taking over from Sir Rob, I inherit a company in a sound financial position with clear strategic direction and vision.

I am sure you will all join me in wishing Sir Rob well in the next stage of his career and thank him for all he has done for Legal & General.

In addition to my appointment there have been a number of changes to your Board this year which I believe offer the correct balance between experience and fresh ideas.

In June we welcomed Dame Clara Furse, formerly Chief Executive of London Stock Exchange Group as a Non-Executive Director of the Group and in September Dr Nigel Wilson joined the Board as Group Chief Financial Officer in succession to Andrew Palmer.

And I would like to take this opportunity to thank Andrew for the contribution he made to Legal & General over his long period with the company as well as formerly welcome Nigel and Dame Clara to the Board.

One of my responsibilities as your Chairman is to continue to deliver effective stewardship of the company.

The Board closely follows developments in corporate governance.

In line with best practice we have established a non-executive chaired Risk committee, which will advise the Board on current risk exposures and future risk strategy.

I have known and worked with Legal & General for many years and have always been impressed by its achievements and its values.

Going forward I see a company which I believe to be well-positioned to deliver continuing growth to you, our shareholders.

And I am looking forward to meeting many of you at this year's Annual General Meeting.
